What is an aviation medical?
What a Class II or Class IV aviation medical involves, and why pilots need one before they fly.
Before you can fly — or keep flying — on a South African licence, you need a valid aviation medical certificate issued by a designated aviation medical examiner (DAME). The exam checks that you're fit to operate safely, covering your general health, vision, hearing, and heart and lung function.
Class II medicals cover private and student pilots. Class IV covers glider and recreational pilots. The doctor doing the exam must be SACAA-approved, which is what a DAME designation means — it's a specific qualification, not something every GP has.
